Kuya Justin Celebrates with 2kk Sampaloc

Written by: Ate Char, U! Happy Officer
It was a fun sunday afternoon as we got to spend it with the children of Tulong Sa Kapwa Kapatid Foundation in Sampaloc Manila. 2KK provides programs to the children in the communities of Sampaloc, Escopa, and Payatas. It has sponsored deserving college students and continues to provide educational programs. It focuses not only on the children’s education but on their values formation as well. Kuya Alvin from 2KK and the very energetic kids welcomed us at Barangy 435 basketball court.
Kuya Justin and his group of football friends wanted to get together this holiday season and share their blessings with these children. Kuya Justin has participated in our previous events. He did football workshop for the kids in the same community. They arrived in their football jersey as they got ready for the day’s activities.
The volunteers introduced themselves to the kids and they joined the groups. The kids shared what they wanted to do during the holiday season. They also came up with their group name and cheer. The first group was Team Level Up of Kuya Mac and Kuya Erns. The kids danced to the song Level Up. Kuya JC’s team was Team Boom Boom and the girls showed off their Momolan dancing skills. Kuya Justin’s team was Team Spirit, representing good qualities of the children, like being responsible, terrific, and intelligent. Ate Jessica’s team was Switch It Up, and Kuya Billy’s Team was Team Cute.
After the group performance we got to watch the spectacular magic show of of Kuya Koby. He made doves fly from everywhere and the kids shouted as they tried catching the birds. Colorful fabric came out of his pouch and he was able to light sticks with fire and make them disappear. He called a child volunteer, Kim, as he put on several costumes on Kim. His friends laughed as Kuya Koby kept changing his outfit. He then drew a face on a white board which magically moves. The kids laughed as the eyes and mouth moved form the board.
The next show we watched was the Bubble Show of Kuya John Paul. As our Bubble Man created bubbles, the kids got so excited as they all rushed to the front trying to pop all the bubbles. The bubble man started out with making a single bubble then he continued making strings of bubbles which he ran across the kids. He made bigger and even bigger bubbles and the kids got so excited as they were able to go in the bubbles and have their photos taken. The volunteers and kids paired up as they took turns being inside the bubbles.
After the two great performances it was time for the Basketball Workshop of Coach Dennis. The volunteers were the group leaders of the teams. He started teaching basic drills like defense, dribbling, and passing. Some of the kids showed great potential as they learned fast. The kids got to learn how to dribble and shoot. Coach Dennis then asked everyone to form two straight lines facing each other as he taught them the proper way to pass the ball. The kids passed the balls to one another while running sideways all the way to the ring. The kids then got the chance to shoot the ball, which was everyone’s favorite. The volunteers helped the kids in their team as it was a competition between teams. Some of the volunteers carried their kids all the way up to the ring so they can make a shot. The team of Kuya JC won the dribble challenge and Kuya Mac’s team won the shooting challenge.
After all the fun everyone was already excited to eat their early dinner. One of the 2KK kids, JM, led the prayer. The kids then got to enjoy their spaghetti and chicken meal. We also gave out prizes to the winners of the basketball challenge. Coach Dennis picked 3 kids as the ones with the most potential. We then had our group photos as the kids thanked the kuyas and ates for a wonderful afternoon. We look forward to seeing Kuya Justin and his friends again in our upcoming events.
