Ate Karen Celebrates with Gawad Kalinga, Taguig

Written by: Kuya Glenn Costales, President
Spells of rain brought by an erratic weather did not stop our Saturday reunion with 25 kids from the Gawad Kalinga community in Laura Drive, Taguig. It was Ate Karen’s special event to celebrate her birthday which actually took place about a month earlier.
The GK Laura kids as always got there bright and early for our morning gathering. Being the gracious hosts that they are, the kids entertained us by singing and dancing to the songs we played in the background while waiting for our sponsor. With their energy brimming, we had them come up already with their group names so we could get the show on the road straight away.
We had a total of 5 groups composed of kids, Ate Karen and our other volunteers. A total of 3 games awaited our animated teams. The 1st game was called Show Me Your Face. We gave out a certain scenario or condition in each round to which the teams had to express using their faces. The scenarios included being extremely cold, hungry, excited and even having a bad tummy. This seemed like a game the kids and volunteers were playing for the 1st time so it definitely looked interesting.
The 2nd game we played was Paper Cup Mathematics. As math questions/ trivia were given, the teams lined up to pass paper cups using straws in their mouths. The number of cups of course corresponded to their answer. We played several rounds with one team emerging as the most skilled and I guess the most ‘math proficient.’
The last game was Pass the Charades. This game saw the teams pass the secret word (kinds of job) throughout each member in their group using only actions. The excitement kicked up a notch here as the teams raced to pass the word quickly.
The 3 games saw 3 winning teams which received puppet art books as prizes. After all the festivities, we sat down for lunch while Ate Karen also distributed her gifts to the kids. They took home some educational and fun wooden puzzles to keep them busy between school works.
Happy birthday again to Ate Karen! Thank U for being part of the wonderful morning with GK Laura.
