184 Ate Johanna/Ate Rivelle Celebrates with Tuklasan

Written by Kuya Harvard

It was a rainy afternoon last January 12, 2013 when we had our second event for this year, but that didn’t stop us and the volunteers from giving the kids part our time and sharing our talents to see them glow with smile as bright as the sun!

This one took place after our event at Missionaries of Charity with lolos and lolas. We had 16 kids from Tuklasan and 14 coming from Barangay 20, Tondo Manila (Partner of ERDA) joined together in another awesome and fun-filled create your own event sponsored by birthday celebrants, Ate Rivelle and Ate Johanna.

Tuklasan Center is a project of ERDA Foundation. It aims to provide care and shelter for street children particularly abandoned boys’ ages 6 years old and up. We’ve been there so many times since 2007 and we’ve seen some of them grow up in the center.

We had balloon twisting by our invited artist, Ate Divine. She made different creations from simple balloons like flowers, swords and even animals like rabbit, mouse, and an elephant. Yey! What was different here is that she took the time to explain how it’s done. Though it seemed so hard, I believe with a bit more practice we might be able to start assembling simple ones on our own. The kids enjoyed guessing what she was going to assemble next. They got to take home one after the event.

Next we had art relay. Kids had a fun time cutting colored papers in different shapes, making cranes and putting it together in a canvass with the volunteers. The canvass showed both speed in putting together everything in the art list and creativity in making it look appealing as well. Check out the photos! 🙂

The creative minds of kids and volunteers were showcased even further in Ate Rivelle’s and Ate Johanna’s next activity, the brilliant bag. Most of the idea from this activity came from Disney’s Art Attack. All the teams really showed excellent results.

Aside from the gifts from our sponsors/ birthday celebrants, another group called The Manila Make Up Artists shared their blessings as well by giving bags with goodies to the kids It was indeed another day of volunteering well spent. Cheers to more great events this 2013!
