188 Bright Lights Year 2 with A Liter of Light

Written by Board Member, Alexis Joy Po.

U! Happy Events partnered with Liter Of Light for the 2nd time to bring smiles with sustainable light in the community of Brgy. Batis, San Juan.

Held at the Liter of Light Center along F.Manalo St., San Juan last Feb 2, 2013, almost a 100 people got to take part in games including bottle art & bottle relays. Teamwork, new friends, and sense of significant community service are a few of the “take homes” of our Ate’s and Kuya’s and kids alike.

The magic show by Kobe the Magician garnered the oooh’s and the ahhhh’s, and dancing to U!’s theme song kept everyone HAPPY on their feet.

Covering the event is Germany’s international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle TV (DWTV). This will be broadcasted in over 30 languages across the globe. Deutsche Welle, which means “German Wave”, is similar to international broadcasters such as the BBC World Service and Voice of America.

We capped off the event with the lighting of lanterns by the volunteers in a nearby center by the Pinaglabanan Shrine. Audience is the residences from Brgy. St.Joseph, who were displaced when a fire hit their community last Christmas. The lanterns brought a symbol of learning that the right use of flame can bring light and even entertainment to the lives of many. “Flame is not harmful, the irresponsibility of (using) it is”, as commented by U! founder, Harvard Uy de Baron.

A sense of community is evident as the children chanted as one to the countdown for the lanterns’ take off. Residents cheered on as each lantern flew to great heights, a symbol of hope that their prayers for a better home reaches the heavens and shall be answered soon. It was indeed a memorable day for all.
