Celebrating life by blessing other kids — what a nice idea for a party, right?
This is exactly what Ate Evitha did to make sure his son’s 2nd birthday is meaningful and memorable.
One fine Saturday in February, after being in hiatus for many months now, I find myself volunteering once again with U! Happy. The sun shone brightly to reflect the smiles and laughter I hear and see on the grounds of Hospicio de San Jose. I thought: what a beautiful day to spend the day!
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we were celebrating a 2-yr old’s birthday. I find it honorable for his mom Ate Evitha to make sure he does not only have fun, but share the day with others as well.
I was instructed to talk to the participants, as it is a practice to brief the kids apart from the adults prior to engagement. I was elated to meet the relatives and friends of the family of Ate Evitha. The heartfelt willingness to participate and celebrate with the family were evident from their smiles and early presence.
Excitement was in the air when we presented the participants and the chosen 3-5 yr old children from the center. Both groups immediately warmed up to each and hugs and chatter was all over.
What would a birthday party be without games and magic? U! Happy core team made sure everyone had a chance to participate. Small and big, everyone either cheered on during the (topple the traffic cones and hula hoop game) or actively and aggressively tried to make their group win the prizes. Chatter-stopping magic show came next and it went with many an amused smile and oooh’s and aaaah’s.
The Evitha family chose Jollibee lunch meals for everyone, and all had their jolly smiles when they saw the treat! Everone joined in right after to sing Ate Evitha’s son a happy birthday and had a nice group photo after too. Daddy and Mommy then gave out special gifts to the children before giving a heartfelt thanksgiving speech.
I’d say, it was a beautiful way to spend one’s birthday. Happy birthday!
