975 Ate Edna's Fun Afternoon with Nayon ng Kabataan

Written by President, Kuya Glenn Costales
Along one of the busy and crowded streets in Mandaluyong sits a shelter for orphaned, abused and exploited children. Nayon ng Kabataan was founded in 1968 by our very own Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and has since been providing invaluable support to kids up to 17 years old. This served as our venue for a lively birthday event.
Upon escaping the main road teeming with people and ‘street commerce’, we were welcomed by the stillness of Nayon ng Kabataan’s grounds with colorful houses and a serene and spacious lawn. It was such a refreshing site.
It wasn’t long when our 3 volunteers – Ate Edna, our birthday celebrant, Ate Myrna and Ate Ella –showed up with a bit of eager curiosity on how the day would unfold. We gave them a brief orientation about our program and they were very much game to participate in any way we need them to.
We were then greeted by 25 well-behaved kids as they were organized into 5 groups. Soon our ates were front and center to introduce themselves to the kids. After distributing them into our teams, we gave them about 10 minutes to get comfortable with one another. They would sure need it to build their teamwork for the games lined up that day.
The first game we played was the Pass the Charades game. With normal jobs as the category, the teams lined up to act out a particular profession to their teammate. That person then had to guess what that is and pass it onto the next. It was a highly energetic 1st game which sure got everyone’s adrenaline pumping.
The next one was a childhood favorite – Doctor Quack Quack. Here the teams utilized their dexterity (or lack of it) in twisting, meshing and interweaving parts of their body for the other team to undo. After a few entangling rounds, one team emerged the winner.
With a little breather, we played the Beach Ball Relay. We did make sure to play our most active game as the last. As the teams lined up in pairs, they squeezed a ball in between their hips and raced around an obstacle. We saw the kids race each other with some even taking a few tumbles along the way. This was such a fitting contest to top it all off.
A sumptuous snack awaited the kids and volunteers. They shared a meal and a few more stories before taking a group photo to conclude our festivities. Our heartfelt thanks go out to our ates for being such wonderful volunteers. They certainly made up for their lack of number with their sincere and willing hearts.
