Why Do We Volunteer?

I have been involved in reaching out to kids since I was 17. It started with Php 5 sandwiches that I was tasked to send out to street children. Later on, I would get more involved by joining friend’s outreach to different groups of kids. In December 2006, I decided to put up a foundation to do more and get more people involved in what I am passionate about- provide support and values to less fortunate kids in our society!

This was taken from the book Mind Your X’s and Y’s: Satisfying the 10 Cravings of a New Generation of Consumers by Lisa Johnson.

So why do we volunteer?

1. We want a chance to make a difference.

We as a connected Generation has a burning, growing desire to make a difference and to use our lives for the greater good. Globally aware, technologically fluent, and often well traveled, our generation is finding innovative and exciting new ways to make contributing more visible, tangible and even more fun.

2. We have a heightened awareness of the world.

The images and headlines say it all. Earthquake-ravaged nations, a tsunami that swept without warning, poverty and AIDS in Africa, plus a vast range of problems right in our own backyards – it’s impossible to ignore how much need exists in every corner of the globe.Today, sitting back in the comfort of our material blessings and ignoring widespread need is simply not an option.

3. We see a chance to lead and step into more skilled positions.

Our connected Generation rarely waits around for anything. The volunteer arena is ripe for young, inspired, and passionate people to innovate and take the lead, learning as they go and forging new paths along the way. Volunteering can serve a dual purpose. It’s a perfect chance to gain professional or business skills, enhance a sparse resume, prepare for a new career, or learn applicable, on-the-job skills.

4. There are opportunities for new friendships and professional connections.

Our generation now is so much more mobile than any other generation. They’re very hungry and looking to connect with people who share their same values. They want to feel at home and are looking for social networks, Creating a way for volunteers to regularly connect and build bonds is becoming a prerequisite for modern social action groups.

5. We seek meaningful adventure.

Our generation believes that if we give our time, resources and effort in a selfless way, not only will we make a difference, but we will return from the journey – literal or otherwise – changed and activated in some important way. A season of service can present a unique sort of inner and outer personal adventure! At the center of this generation beats a heart that desperately longs to make a difference. They will continue to find fresh ways to fulfill that vision.
