359 Musicoveries with Project Pearls

Written by Kuya Harvard

Musicoveries is a word medley of Music and Discovery. It was an afternoon of learning and appreciating music lead by ABS CBN Philharmonic Orchestra. Its our second year of invitation to get volunteers and kids appreciate music more in its entirety. There were lessons on insurments, composers, conductors and different kinds of music.

We had lunch with 15 volunteers first at KFC Harbour Square. Here we got to meet mostly young volunteer who had a either a break from school or had an off day at work. Its a Friday! Kuya Harvard was with newly elected board, Ate Charmain Tan.

Minutes after we met 30 kids from Project Pearls at the entrance of Aliw Theatre. They came from their exam day. Most of the kids study at Vicente Lim Elementary School in Manila.

Musicoveries featured Filipino classic songs like Kay Ganda ng Musika by Ryan Cayabyab and Please Be Careful with My Heart by Jose Mari Chan; themes like Star Wars, Jaws and Superman by John Williams; 2013 hits like Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus, Roar by Katy Perry and even Gentleman by Psy. The songs connect and were familiar with elementary students. We were joined by hundreds other from different parts of the Metro.

There were also guests who played instruments and sang a song. An interesting part was getting a student to try out being a conductor.
Playing musical instruments is important to have discipline according to Gerald Salonga. He facilitated the whole experience.

We look forward to Musicoveries year 3 next year. Join us.
