430 Kuya Ryan’s Christmas with Little Lights Ministry

Written by Core Team Leader, Ren dela Cruz

It may have been three days past Christmas, but for the 100 children from Little Lights Ministry who celebrated with us, December 28 was a day still very much filled with Christmas cheer as U! Happy volunteers went to Countryside covered court in Pasig for a Christmas Dance Workshop.

We started the event with a fun introduction by the volunteers, led by our generous sponsor, kuya Ryan. Each volunteer had to tell their names to the children in song, and this part got everyone entertained as the volunteers attempted to sing their name in high and low tunes. We then grouped the volunteers and children together, so they could be divided into smaller teams for getting-to-know. Part of getting-to-know included asking each person in the team who was good at dancing–whom Kuya Harvard all encouraged to show their dance moves to everyone.

After that entertaining activity, we then moved on to a famous game called Stop-Dance, where the teams all had to dance to the music and stop when the music stops. The game was pretty challenging since all team members must not move, and the whole team is out should one person do so. Everyone got into competitive mode and it took awhile to declare a team winner! After the Stop-Dance, Kuya Harvard told everyone that we would then be starting the actual dance workshop, which I would be leading.

We started off with a warm-up dance to the tune of Jingle Bell Rock, to get everyone prepped in following dance steps and choreography. After the warm-up I showed them the dance we would be learning that afternoon, which was choreographed to the beat of pop hit song “Happy”, by Pharell. I spent a few minutes teaching the steps and asking them to follow, after which we danced the steps along with the music. It was such a blast looking at the little kids who were jumping up and down and just enjoying the beat! The volunteers were also excitedly showing the children the right steps, and helping them remember which step was next. After a few rounds of reviewing the dance, we all danced the full choreography together, and kuya Harvard then chose the group who could do the steps best. Everyone did a great job though, in memorizing the steps with just a limited amount of time!

After the workshop, everyone looked ready to be reenergized, so we gave out lunch for the volunteers to distribute to their respective teams. We also had a photobooth set up, which they could all enjoy once their groups were done eating. Once lunch was finished, the volunteers then turned over grocery items and school supplies to the kids, to aid them during the season and as they return for school. It was such a happy moment seeing the kids light up as they were being handed the goodies. As a surprise number, the Little Lights kids thanked the volunteers by way of singing several songs, with piano accompaniment! It was a touching moment for everyone who was present–seeing the children celebrating Christmas and having others share blessings to them. To cap off the fun day, we ended with a group photo and big bear hugs for the volunteers, from the kids of Little Lights. We would like to thank Kuya Ryan and the U! Happy volunteers for this event! Thanks to you, the kids of Little Lights had an extended Christmas celebration and got more love and blessings!
