It was the advance birthday celebration of the adorable Kuya Aeon, who is turing four this year. Kuya Aeon’s mom, Ate Mary has been doing outreach activities for the past few years every December as a thanksgiving event and also to celebrate Kuya Aeon’s birthday. This is Ate Mary’s second time creating an event with us. This year she chose to celebrate with the children of Hospicio de San Jose. Established in 1810, it is the first social welfare agency in the country and can only be accessible via Ayala Bridge. Located in the center of Pasig River, it provides a home for the orphans, abandoned, and the elderly.
As the adorable toddlers started waking up from their afternoon naps, they were so excited to see us waiting for them in their play area. Some of them wanted to go out at once but they had to shower first and eat their snacks. When they finished they ran out to their play area and started hugging us. Ate Mary and Kuya Aeon arrived as the toddlers were ready for the fun.
We first played the Pass the Ball Game. We gathered everyone into a big circle and gave 3 balls to the group. As Kuya Rich sang the B-I-N-G-O song we passed the ball around. When the song ended the three children holding the balls got prizes. We did a couple of rounds as the winners got plushy slippers which they excitedly wore at once. After the game Kuya Rich did a story telling activity. The volunteers carried their partner toddlers and participated in the activity. As Kuya Rich did some actions we guided the toddlers into following him.
Throughout the activities our balloon twister Ate Divine kept creating cute balloon shapes. The toddlers excitedly grabbed her stash of long balloons. She formed hearts, hats, flowers, dogs, and a really big machine gun which she gave to Kuya Aeon. He happily held on to his balloon gun and had photos taken with the kids.
As Christmas is a season of giving Ate Mary and Kuya Aeon gave lots of gifts to these kids. They gave cute big plushy characters that open up into blankets. The kids hugged them at once and didn’t want to let go. The staff then arranged the plushies to be put on their beds. It was so cute to see the plushies laid out on their colorful bedsheets beside their pillows. Kuya Aeon also gave wrapped presents to everyone. It was a nice surprise as everyone got to have shoes. The girls got ballet flats while the boys got blue sneakers. On top of all of the gifts they also gave out storybooks to all the toddlers. After the activities we gave out the food for the kids. They were so behaved as they ate quietly in their round table. We then had our group photo with the children. The kids happily wore their new shoes and hugged their toys as we thank Ate Mary and Kuya Aeon for sharing their blessings with the children of Hospicio de San Jose.
