161 Kids Got Talent

Written by Kuya Harvard

One way of paving a sustainable future for kids is enhancing their talents and skills. Our team had vision for this project since last year. Kids Got Talent finally happened last October 20 at 3rd floor, CCF Makati and Big Shift Studios A-Venue Mall in Makati Avenue, Makati City.

The main event was a Dance Showdown from 5 kids organizations namely Bahay Tuluyan from Manila, Concern from Markina, Little Lights from Cainta, Project Pearls from Ulingan, Manila and Tulong sa Kapwa Kapatid from Payatas. They were all previous beneficiaries of U! Can initiatives with partner, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. 10 participants per group from ages 8-14 were trained prior to event day by partner, Big Shift Studios, one of the most prominent dance studios in the country. The dance showdown were similar to ABS CBN’s “Showtime” wherein dances feature much creativity and skill.

105 volunteers came to be partnered with 93 kids. Many say it was one of our best events. We definitely agree. This event was special for many reasons. It had much preparation. It showcased enhancing talents. It was centered on dance which is very popular among kids and young volunteers. It had many supporters. Thanks to all who made Kids Got Talent, an event to remember.

Besides the Dance Showdown, volunteers and kids also enjoyed a number of other activities. One of them is our pump up game, “Volunteer, Kid, Dance”. It was coined from the game Bahay, Baboy, Bagyo. The only difference is that they have to dance first before they group themselves. The volunteers served as bahay while the baboy were the kids.

We also had the exciting dance workshop. 3 choreographers from Big Shift- Labb, Chuck and Gio head the workshop together with Kuya Benj, Ate Raqcuel, Ate Nikki and 3 of Coffee Bean’s core team- Ate Monica, Ate Alexi and Ate Elaine. The whole session ran for 30 minutes which was divided into 3 groups. A collective dance followed. The songs were a mesh of Without You and Undefeated. We also danced our signature song, Happy.

We invited 2 groups to perform while even took a breather for lunch and photo booth. The first one was a Christian band that performs for kids. They were called South of Market or SOMA. The next was Next Ep, a hip hop dance group of Big Shift. “We wanted to showcase different types of talents”, says Kuya Harvard.

Two more special people took stage. The first was our very own Kuya JB. He performed a unique laser show! Its his new thing from his barrage of great magic illusions. The next was celebrity, Iza Calzado. Kuya Harvard met her a month before and convinced her every time to drop by. She did and she gave a great message to inspire the kids.

Congratulations to first place winner, Little Lights for a great rendition of modern song with etnic dance. All the groups dance so well. Our judges, Kuya Eric Javier, member of the World Hip Hop Champions this year; Kuya Benj, Board Member of U! Happy Events; and Kuya Benj Madrigal, COO of Big Shift, were all amazed by the showcase of confidence on their talents and skills.

Watch out for the videos of their performances soon.
