77 Kids Christmas Stories 2 with Metro World Child

Written by Kuya Harvard

A post from a first time volunteer of U! Happy Events. Her name is Cassandra Dizon. 🙂 I hope you get inspired from her experience with Kids of Smokey Mountain.

Last Saturday, I climbed a no ordinary mountain. it has no trees, rivers, and definitely no fresh air. The only things visible are houses made from scrap materials, black smoke, and the hundred piles of garbage.

With only my trusty sling bag, my event ID, and myself, I went to Smokey Mountain with the other volunteeres of U!Foundation to give joy to the kids there.

As our group made our way to the activity area, we were greeted by the excited smiles of children. Kuya Harvard made an introductory speech. and then a choir sang for us. A magician came to entertain the kids as well. I was really in awe to see the simple joys of the kids in Smokey Mountain. There they are under the heat of the sun sitting on used sacks that’s been put together and yet they still manage to enjoy the program.

How many of us experienced that when we were kids? I remember my childhood days being spent in the comforts of our house, in the park, in the mall, and in a good school. The school in Smokey Mountain was just an old building with blue paint facing the now-polluted Pasig River.

The program went on and we prepared the food for the kids. We handed it along with a pair of slippers for each kid. They were really happy. The best part was when we hear them say “thank you ate!”. It was really music to our ears.

After the handing out of food and slippers, we played with the kids on the mini-playground that our group has prepared. There was an inflatable, face paints and dart games. There was also a station where we gave out Toy Story 3 toys! (The toys were sponsored by Shell Company.)

For the rest of the afternoon, we just played with them. Some kids were hugging me. Some were playing with my hair. And some just goofed off with me. It was really fun to play ATE for a day! 🙂

After the playing activity, it was time to say goodbye. Kuya Harv thanked all the children who came and all the volunteers. “I know everyone of us is tired and a lot dirtier than we first came here…” He said and everyone giggled. “But all of that do not matter anymore because today we all did something great!”

He was right. Aside from the material gifts, the time we spent with the kids was the most priceless of it all.

Just being there… seeing the situation they’re in… seeing their environment… experiencing their lifestyle… it made me realize how lucky I am for all of God’s blessings and the least I could do is to share it with others especially now that it’s Christmas time.

For us volunteers, it may seem like an ordinary day. But I’m sure that for the kids, it was an unforgettable day. It really opened my eyes not only to the current situation of our society but about life as well. The simplest things in life are the ones we should always cherish.

Hopefully I get to do more events for kids through U! Happy Events in the future. They’re really nice people. I really felt their kindness and sincerity throughout the entire event. 🙂

That day, I came home really tired and looking all haggard. But I went home with a heartfelt happiness and fulfillment.

I truly believe that for a place like Smokey Mountain, dreams still exist. And as long as those kids have hopes in the hearts, faith, and aspirations in life, there would always be a piece of heaven on that no ordinary mountain.
