Acclaimed writer Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “The purpose of life is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well”. Making a difference is one of life’s greatest purposes and privileges, and ate Jo-e, Giving is Social Founder and U! Happy ambassador, sure knows a lot about it. Giving is Social, founded in Singapore, is a partner of U! Happy events and carries the same mission in creating an impact in people’s lives. Prior to this event, we also collaborated for a benefit workshop entitled CrossRoads, aimed to equip our volunteers, and with proceeds benefitting U! Happy events.
Last Sunday, May 1, Giving is Social represented by ate Jo-e, her husband kuya Mike, along with their friends and U! Happy volunteers spent the day making a difference in the lives of 25 kids of Gawad Kalinga Pasig. It was both a dental mission and art workshop in one, which was truly helpful for the kids as the workshop eased the tension of having to get a tooth taken out or treated. We were joined by our passionate and dedicated team of volunteer dentists and doctor, who gave their precious talent to bless the kids as well. Apart from the dental mission, the doctor on board was present to give general checkups for both kids and their parents who were currently experiencing ailments. Joining us for the art workshop portion was one of U! Happy’s resident artists, ate Blanca, who joyfully led the kids in producing wonderful art and unleashing their creativity.
To add to the fun, the kids and the volunteers also got to play some unique games prior to and after their turn on the dentist’s chair. We had our own version of Tic Tac Toe, which hyped up everyone since it was time bound and was like a relay, needing both mental and physical skills. The other game was Pass the Ball, which was meant to develop their cognitive skills in an exciting way. The winners were group 4, with the ate and kuya in the group being the first ones to stand up and do the assigned dance move for the number that was called.
Lunch soon followed after a jampacked morning, and we capped off the day by giving out dental packs for the kids, to better support them in the health and hygiene aspect. A group picture marked the end of the awesome event, and the kids all sweetly hugged their ates and kuyas goodbye. Thank you to our friends at Giving is Social providing both health support and fun to the kids of GK!
