459 DLSU Student’s Dance Workshop with Shepherd of the Hills

Written by Board Member, Matthew Chua

March 6, 2015 (Friday) was all about grooving and shaking for twenty two (22) kids coming from Shepherd of the Hills Foundation together with eight (8) volunteers and sponsors of U! Happy Events.
The event was started by volunteers introducing their names and rating their dancing skills from 1-10 (1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest). Kids also did the same thing. At the end of the activity, volunteers, who rated themselves 5 and below, were partnered to kids, who rated themselves 8-10. Volunteers were instructed to follow the dance moves of their partners. The objective of this activity was to at least improve the dancing skills of our volunteers even before we officially start our dance workshop.
Kids and volunteers were divided into four groups and started doing warm-ups, which was lead by Ate Mia Cabalfin (our dance instructor). Right after doing warm-ups, ate Pia started teaching the routine, which will be performed by everyone. Everyone listened attentively and performed well especially during the group dance.
The event ended with group photos, gift giving, and warm hugs given by kids to their new-found ates and kuyas. At the end of the day, we can say that our dance workshop really paid off considering that our kids learned new dance steps from a professional dancer. What they’ve learned from the activity will definitely boost their confidence and will develop rapport.
This event won’t be possible without our sponsors, who are students of DLSU. We would also give credit to Nikki Recio for initiating this “Create Your Own Event”. We challenge you to make one too for the children.
