775 DLSU JMA’s Tutorial and Games with JD Salvador

Written by Secretary, Ate Ren dela Cruz
Much has been said about how important education is to the developmental growth of children and their future success in life, but the sad reality is that there are still many kids belonging to underprivileged families who do not even have enough provision for, nor access to, an education. Thankfully, there are some who choose to share their blessings and create organizations which cater to kids of these communities, equipping them with programs that could help bring the light of education to their lives. One such organization is JD Salvador Foundation in Tondo, Manila.
Last July 8, we trooped over to Tondo to meet the kids and launch the first day of their tutorial season. With us were sponsors from DLSU JMA led by Ate Mich, and we were also joined by our U! Happy volunteers from AIESEC. The day began with the volunteers all introducing themselves to the 25 children, who were ready and rearing to start. After the introductions wherein kuya Harvard asked the volunteers to say their name with matching dance moves, we grouped the kids and volunteers. To energize all those present, we played a game entitled Pass the Ball, as the kids attentively listened to kuya Harv’s instruction while improving their motor skills as well.
Next up was the Tutorial proper, which consisted of problem sets for Numbers, Logic and the Alphabet. Our kuyas and ates eagerly coached the kids and to make the tutorial more fun, kuya Harvard announced that the first group to finish their worksheets correctly would win a prize! It was really inspiring seeing the kids at work, and the volunteers devoting their time to bless these kids with the gift of knowledge. After answering the worksheets, it was time for another game to get the kids up and about once more. We played a new game called “Turn Around” where the groups formed circles, and had to turn around with one hand at the back and one hand holding a spoon with a calamansi, and then passing it on to their next teammate. The first group to finish all players without dropping the calamansi wins the game!
With such an activity-packed program, it was time for meals, so ate Mich and her co-sponsors distributed the food they bought for everyone. Once done, they then gave each kid a set of school supplies to get them even more ready for school! We ended the event with a group photo, and each child warmly hugged the volunteers afterward, thanking them for spending time not just to have fun with them, but to help equip them with skills valuable for education. As JD Salvador continues on with their tutorials, DLSU JMA committed to spend time and continue volunteering for the kids until the program ends. Thank you to our sponsor-volunteers for helping give the kids of JD Salvador hope for the future!
