181 Ate Nikki’s Christmas Village with Virlanie Foundation

Written by one of our core team leaders, Nikki Pangan.

Have you ever collected all the toys you played before? Did you kept them somewhere in your house, or donated it to other kids? Here’s our story about old toys, recycled stuff and “Hand me Down stuffs” that turned out into a Christmas Village…

Way back in September 1996, my Aunt and my Dad was thinking about a Christmas Village decoration.
They eventually started with the first one- a Belen set with a mountain that is made from screen and paper mache. Then there’s the plain white small houses and small people that we hand painted. After we put some small towns, trains, a farm, and a mini zoo. Eventually it became a habit, an interesting one.

Every year, it gets bigger, brighter and more exciting. Our relatives started to donate small toys like Polly Pockets, mini Soldiers, Dinosaurs, mini pet shop, miniatures made of clay, train set, fairies, even the whole cast of Disney characters were added in the Christmas Village collection. Eventually the sala is now a village.

It became a tradition since then that our house is open for everyone to see our “masterpiece”, especially the young ones who’ll surely enjoy touring around. We also got to inspire them to take care of their toys, complete set or not.

Yearly, we invite kids from Bantay Bata and Street Children around Makati to let them see the decorations and do some gift giving.

My 2012 was a good year for me, I’ve been part of the U! Happy Events core team, by summer I got this very interesting job with Bert Lozada Swim School as a Swim Instructor. So this year was a bit different. I partnered with U! Happy Events to make an event with kids from Virlanie Foundation. My family and my friend, which I fondly called Babsi helped me prepare food and give away for the kids. It was a small, short event but it was one of my fondest moment.
