941 Ate Shine and Ate Jasmine Celebrates with Bahay Aruga

Written by Core Team Leader, Ate Iris Boo
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon when we set up the event for the birthday celebrants who were Ate Shine and Ate Jasmine. They chose to celebrate their special day with the kids from Bahay Aruga. It is at San Marcelino Street, Manila, a free halfway house for pediatric cancer patients.
The program began when the Ates, who were celebrating their birthdays, were introduced together with their 3 other close friends. There were 10 kids who were present at that time. The first activity for them was to group themselves in 3 where in 1 Ate or Kuya must have 2 kids to attend to. The formed groups were given 5 minutes to get to know each other’s name, favorite hobby and favorite food. Most of the kids’ favorite food is fried chicken while their favorite pastime is to either sleep or to play all day.
Right after the question and answer portion comes the art related game in which the Ates and the kids were asked to create banderitas using a straw & colored papers that must be cut into triangles. The group who got the most number of triangle colored papers were announced as the winner. In that game you could really see the excitement on their faces. You’d know that the kids are putting so much effort and determination in winning the challenge.
The final game for the kids was the ‘Grip & Press’ it was a test of person’s agility. For this game, the host will tell the leaders of the group whether they’re going to grip or press the hula hoop, then who everexecutes the action first would win. Before we finally wrap up the program, we the kids enjoyed their simple merienda, a delicious Palabok from Jollibee.
It was a simple yet meaningful event for everyone. Having a chance to interact with the kids of Bahay Aruga is what makes everything so delightful and I could say that they truly are an inspiration. We all know that every person has their own battles or challenges to face; some seems easy while others go through a more difficult time. Well, whatever it is, the most important thing is to never give up and to continue on fighting. And like these little brave warriors from Bahay Aruga, may we always take from them, the value of being grateful and joyful for the gift of life.
Kudos to the group of Ate Shine and Ate Jasmine for having their special day here. They have proven that sharing blessings don’t require a huge amount of work. Besides, volunteering is indeed a fun thing to do! Everyone learned and had fun at the event. It goes to show that whoever you are with, whether it is your family, friends, co-workers or colleagues, you can always be a blessing to somebody.
