743 Ate Maria Celebrates with Habitat for Humanity

Written by Board Member, Ate Issa Gayatin
Saturday morning of April 30, 2016 were happily spent in Mano Amiga despite the scorching heat of the sun as young college women of UPLB braved the traffic and spent their precious time with the kids of Habitat for Humanity in FTI, Paranaque. It was their desire to be with these kids no matter what. Evidently, we have been designed to live for something greater than ourselves. Sharing joys and making a contribution to the lives of these kids have brought color and meaning in our everyday lives. And this was what Ate Maria Rosario Razonable believed in when she sponsored today’s activity.
The event started with a grouping and face painting. Kuya Rey, U! Happy’s resident artist, made everyone’s request and the faces of the kids were all highlighted by this artistic creations. Some popular requests were flowers, favorite cartoon characters and shapes. There was also one kid who requested his favorite local actor- Alden. As everyone was waiting for their turns, we had simple games like Get-in game and Bahay, Baboy and Bagyo, and when everyone got tired, we decided to serve the delightful snacks thereafter. It was also a time for them to have fellowship with their respective groups.
By the time Ate Maria and her friends arrived, the face painting activity were done. So for the kids to get to know them better, Ate Amy asked the volunteers to line up in front and to share to the kids their names and what they do in life. Afterwards, we distributed them to the group of kids. There were a total of 5 groups with 6 kids in each group and 5 volunteers who participated in the event. After the getting to know stage, Kuya Kobi, our resident magician did his awesome show. All eyes were glued to his fun and amazing tricks especially the volunteers who seemed to be having more fun above everyone. During the last performance of Kuya Kobi, he asked a volunteer from the kids. He then brought out a wooden material to be placed in the neck. A kid volunteered but when he saw what Kuya Kobi was about to do, he backed out. Good thing one kid braved to go in front and went through the amazing trick. Everyone applauded thereafter. Kudos to our brilliant magician, Kuya Koby.
Afterwards, it was time to play another game- hula together game. We made the group of kids and volunteers lined up. The rule is to be able to transfer the hula hoop from one end of the line to another without using their hands. Laughter and cheers filled the whole area. For seconds, some groups finished the relay. And finally, Team 4 was awarded.
The activity was nearing towards the end, so we distributed the give aways bags containing school supplies. The volunteers were all smiles as they distribute it to their respective groups. Then we had a group photo including a wacky shot. Before the kids left the area, they gave warm hugs to their ates and kuyas, bringing with them brand new memories that they will always remember in their lifetime. This is what each U! Happy volunteer desires to see – the connection between a volunteer and a kid. That both will be bringing home an experience that they will cherish for the rest of their lives and an experience that will inspire them to share to their friends and families.
