771 Ate Jannie Celebrates with National Children’s Hospital

Written by Board Member, Ate Charmain Tan
Our sunday morning was spent at National Children’s Hospital. It was our fourteenth event at NCH since our partnership started with them in 2010. It was the birthday celebration of Ate Jannie. This is her second year celebrating with U! Happy Events. Last year Ate Jannie, Kuya Chris, and their other friends celebrated at Philippine Children’s Medical Center, also with children battling with different kinds of illnesses. This year she wanted to spend her birthday with the children at NCH. Once again her friends and family came and celebrated with her.
As the volunteers arrived we asked them to help out some children in their rooms and bring them out to the hallway where they can participate in the activities we’ve planned for them.
The first activity was the Show Me Your Face where Kuya Harvard would give emotions and everyone had to show them through facial expressions. Some of the emotions were Gulat, Kilig, Excited, and others. The adorable kids tried their best in expressing the emotions with the help of their ates and kuyas.
It was followed by the spectacular magic show of Kuya Kobe. He did some of his famous tricks, like appearing to cut a Coca Cola bottle in half while staying intact. He did the umbrella and flower tricks. He also had the doves and the cutest rabbits. They kept popping out as the kids watched with excitement. He called the birthday celebrant Ate Jannie to join him in front. He put in a ring around Ate Jannie’s neck and pushed a stick across her neck which appeared to have cut through her but because Kuya Kobe was showing off his magic skills Ate Jannie was ok! Kuya Kobe finished off his act with the flying table which went up and around the kids.
After the exciting magic show we had the Bubble Show. The kids watched in delight as the Bubble Man formed lots of bubbles. He started with small bubbles until eventually they got bigger and bigger. We called on some kids and volunteers go inside the bubbles while we took cool photos of them.
After the show the volunteers accompanied the kids back in to their rooms and we gave out storybooks to the kids. The volunteers read out some of the stories for the children. We then gave out their lunch and gifts. Ate Jannie’s sponsor Cherry Mobile gave out cute bears and tumblers for the children. The kids also received gifts packs like coloring books, crayons, inflatable balls, snacks, and other treats. In addition to the gifts we also got to try the Giant Burgers from Hungree Burgers.
Before the day ended the kids sang a happy birthday song for Ate Jannie. Some of these children are suffering from leukemia at a very young age. Some have been staying in the hospital for months now for their chemotherapy. These children have been fighting a big battle. Some days you just have to create your own sunshine. In our small way we were able to bring smiles and hope to the children.
