795 Ate Carla’s Mind Museum with Precious Heritage Children’s Home

Written by Core Team Leader, Edelma Sy
It was a very rainy Saturday, but U! Happy Events just wouldn’t back down to the weather (and traffic!) as we joined Ate Carla’s birthday celebration with 29 bubbly Precious Heritage children and her very supportive sister and friends at the Mind Museum.
It was a very animated afternoon for all of us which began with Ate Rica grouping everyone into the tables. Food, which arrived early, was then distributed to each group who also spent the time getting to know one another.
To warm us up for the Science Show, Ate Rica decided to do a Science Quiz game! She tossed 20 questions about planets and moons and scientists and all members of every team must raise their hands before they get the chance to answer. It was just so fun to discover Science geeks in the room. Ate Rica gave easy questions for the kids to answer, and the difficult ones for the ates and the kuyas. Teams 6 and 11 tied in at the end of 20 questions but a tie-breaker resulted to team 6 bagging the prize of Kinder Joys.
After a short break, we then proceeded to the Auditorium to watch Mind Mover Ate Artha demonstrate various science experiments like (magically) keeping paper money from burning after setting it on fire and crushing a 5-gallon container hands-free! She also did several experiments using liquid nitrogen and briefed everyone about its characteristics. She explained how clouds are formed by hot and cold temperatures and gave us a demo by going around and making artificial clouds for everyone. It was truly a very stimulating and enjoyable experience for the children, as they not only watched and listened to Ate Artha introduce liquid nitrogen, but also had a taste (or not, since it’s tasteless) of the substance when they lined up in front for meringues soaked in it. It was such an interesting sight to see clouds of fog come out of the kids’ mouth and nostrils as they try to hold the very cold meringues in!
The science show had ended, but the afternoon was far from over as we returned to Mind Pod 1 for our other main activity which was the rocket-making workshop. Before we began making rockets, Ate Artha first showed us the things we can see in space. She used a very cool software called NASA’s Eyes (which you can download freely by the way ) and gave us a short virtual tour of our solar system. The kids were then given used plastic bottles and colored papers to make their own spaceship with the help of their ates and kuyas. When everyone was done, we all went outside the museum to “launch” the rockets. One by one, with cheers from their ates and kuyas and the supervision of the Mind Movers, the children pumped the launcher and set their rockets flying. All the children were delighted to see their rocket ships successfully take off.
When all the children had their turn, we gathered for group photos and went back upstairs. On our way back, three boys came to me and asked to hold my hand. I gladly obliged but asked them why. They told me they were scared. I looked around wondering what they could be afraid of, but when I found nothing particularly scary, I asked them again what made them afraid. Then they pointed at the escalator. I told them to just avoid the yellow line and they’ll be safe. While we were on the escalator, the boys were very thrilled and were giggling among themselves perhaps for the novelty of their experience.
And I felt a deep gratitude, for people like Ate Carla, who open the world to kids and enable them to gain not only new knowledge, but happy and meaningful experiences that help them have a sense of wonder and hope for what life may hold.
Back at the Mind Pod, we sang a birthday song for Ate Carla who herself thanked the children and her friends for celebrating with her. After the candle was blown, Ate Carla, along with some of her friends gave the gift of school supplies and chips to the kids. Her friend Ate Dianne also brought Kinder Joys for everyone.  After another set of group photos, we capped off the event with hugs and thank yous between the children and their ates and kuyas. The kids also sang a Thank You song before they bade their new friends goodbye.
That day might have been very cold because of the rain, but the laughter and the love that was shared in that event surely must have brought warmth to everyone’s heart. Thank you Ate Carla and happy birthday!
