In the middle of the Ayala Bridge is a pathway to a river island, Isla de Convalecencia, where Hospicio de San Jose stands. This is where Ate Bianca celebrated her 26th birthday, one rainy Saturday afternoon.
Hospicio de San Jose was established during the Spanish Era in 1778 and now serves as a home not only for children without permanent homes, but also for the mentally and physically disabled of varied ages.
Ate Bianca celebrated her with 75 residents of the Hospicio de San Jose. About half of them were special-needs children and persons with physical and mental disability. The afternoon of fun was about to begin as the residents started coming into the venue with bright, big smiles and hugs to show the enthusiasm they had for the afternoon ahead.
Ate Bianca, along with her family and friends, prepared an afternoon full of games, a balloon twisting show and a bubbles show for the residents. The celebrant and her guests were grouped with the residents. They got to know the names of their resident group mates and their favorite food. It was nice to see their smiles as they talked and shared and come together as a group. After everyone had created and shouted their group names, they enjoyed playing Pass the Charade, which is a twist to the usual Pass the Message game, and Paint Me a Picture, wherein they had to act out scenes and whoever portrays it best, wins!
After the games, everyone settled down to watch the balloon twisting show. Balloons of all shapes and colors started floating around while the children and adults alike played and enjoyed the show and the joy was evident from the residents’ eyes and smiles.
Everyone’s favorite part came next: eating time! During the delicious meal of spaghetti and sandwiches, Ate Bianca’s family and friends had the time to get to know the residents further and spent time talking with them. While everyone was finishing their meal, some residents performed, showing off their singing skills and some of the children also danced “Baby Shark” to cap off the performance portion. It was a heartwarming sight to see.
About 19 years ago, Ate Bianca celebrated her birthday at this same venue for her 7th birthday. It shows that she has a heart full of giving and love that she wants to share, especially for those in need.
