1093 Ate Beth Celebrates with St. Pio

Written by: Kuya Carlos Romulo, Core Team Member

On a sunny Sunday afternoon of December, the Team proceeded to St. Pio Parish New Church in Parañaque City, where Ates and Kuyas from Philippine Desiccants Inc. (“PDI”) sponsored a Thanksgiving Celebration with 80 wonderful kids from Severina Community. It was the first time that U! conducted an outreach program in the said community, and the kids did not disappoint us. We were welcomed with warm hugs and cheerful greetings. And contrary to our expectation, the kids were very organized and patient.
The program commenced by having the kids grouped into 8, with ten kids and an Ate and Kuya from PDI comprising each group. The kids introduced themselves to their Ates and Kuyas, and discussed the wonderful things they love about Christmas. As expected, majority, if not all, of the kids were excited for the gifts they are to receive on the upcoming holiday festivities.
The teams were also required to think of their respective team names, and prepare a short dance number. And despite being given limited time, the kids pulled off a very entertaining and competitive dance showdown, as if they were given a month to prepare. Team Oppa, Werpa, Lodi, Petmalu, among others, showcased their talents. The showdown went down to the wire, with Team Werpa being victorious.
For the next part of the program, we played a “pass the message game”. But this is not the typical pass the message game which merely requires good memory to win. Note that the game is played by drawing a Christmas related object at the back of your teammate, where the last person of the team will have to correctly guess what was drawn at his/her back. The kids were challenged as they were tasked to draw a reindeer, Christmas lights, snowman and other things we see during Christmas season. It was very entertaining as some teams had opposing and conflicting answers, but in the end, the game was won by the team with the most efficient coordination.
After the game, the kids had their meryenda while our Ates and Kuyas from PDI prepare the gifts and giveaways. At that moment, the joy and excitement from the kids’ faces were quite apparent, as they feast on fried chicken and pancit while joyfully observing their Ates and Kuyas. While the kids were feasting on their meryenda, we, together with our Ates and Kuyas from PDI, started to distribute candies, chocolates, chips and various gifts to every kid in the community, making sure that every kid goes home with an item. Suffice it to say, we came home with our Christmas box empty. Lastly, our Ates and Kuyas from PDI made sure that the kids go home with “aguinaldo” and some pasalubong for their respective families.
The success of the event would have not been possible were it not for the joint and collective efforts of the Parish Community and the Kuyas and Ates of PDI, headed by Ms. Beth De Lemos. The 80 kids from the community were just one of the many beneficiaries of PDI’s continuous drive in promoting an effective corporate social responsibility (CSR). Thus, we would like to commend Philippine Desiccants Inc. and its members for showing that while a corporation is primarily driven by growth and profit, it also has a moral obligation to elevate the lives of other people.Thank you, Ms. Lemos and our Ates and Kuyas from PDI for being a constant instrument of love and generosity to the poor and marginalized sectors of our society.
