229 Ate Adeth Celebrates with White Cross

Written by Kuya Harvard

Children are blessings from God. Having realized that, an encounter with them is a blessing. After 3 years, we got to book again with White Cross. When this institution was opened in 1937, its service was directed to the children of tuberculosis patients. Today, White Cross provides a temporary haven for children of poor unwed mothers, of physically incapacitated parents, of prisoners and of victims of rape or incest.

Ate Adeth and her friends chose younger kids. There were 45 volunteers for the event to be partnered with 34 children. It was a unique encounter for our team as we normally reach out to 7-12 year olds. This time, the cute, active and happy kids we got partnered with are aged 3-6 year olds.

The rain poured hard for an hour just before we started the program. Good thing most of us were already in the venue. We started with pairing up the kids with their respective ates and kuyas so they can start getting to know each other. Despite the age of the kids, they were interacting with the volunteers.

We invited Ate Divine, a balloon twisting specialist to give a workshop on her expertise. She came wearing a clown costume and demonstrated complex designs to teach to the kids and the volunteers. Each tandem got 1-2 balloons to work on. After the activity, the pairs got to make sword and dog shaped balloons.

Next we played Spell It Out. In this game, the volunteers have to spell the names of the given vegetable using the children as real life letters. The game finished as a close fight as every team became quite competitive.

Ate Adeth and the whole team of U! Happy Events ended the program with merienda and gift giving. Our group also made sure that there was ample time for engaging and sharing among the pairs. It was truly an unforgettable experience for the volunteers and the children of White Cross.
