Written by: Ate Charmain Tan, External Vice President
This afternoon we all headed to Museo Pambata. It was the joint birthday celebration of Ate Sev and Ate Liz. They were joined by their friends who mostly worked at HP Philippines. They invited 50 children from A-HA! Learning Center to enjoy the tour. Established in 2008, it is a free tutoring center for the street kids living in the communities in Makati. It caters to public school kids from grades 1 to 10 and offers classes in English, Math, and Science. We have partnered with A-HA! since 2014 and had eleven events with them in the past. The children excitedly arrived early from Makati as we gathered at Karapatan Hall in Museo Pambata.
We started the day by grouping the kids and the volunteers. They groups were able to get to know one another as they introduced themselves. We then played the Tic Tac Toe game. We placed a 3×3 foot grid in front. Pink and yellow colored towels were used as chips. As with the rules of a regular tic tac toe game teams had to form straight lines to get a point. The team that forms the most number of straight lines within the given time won the round. Teams competed in twos. Teams one and two lined up in front, one group took the pink while the other took the yellow. When the time started players could run one at a time to either put or remove chips from the grid. The winner from that round would then move on to the championship round. The teams were very competitive as they formed strategies to defeat the other team. The volunteers were also very competitive as they gave instructions to the kids on where to put the chips. Everyone cheered and laughed as they played the exciting game.
After the game everyone got ready to do the tour. The groups were guided by their ates and kuyas as they all headed to the rooms. The tour would be done per room and the museum guide would ring the bell to signal it was time to move to the next room. The first room was Old Manila which showed the Spanish Era. There was the Spanish galleon and a miniature cathedral where the kids were able to go in. The next room was Body Works where the kids got to learn about human anatomy. There were life sized organs that the kids were able to get in to. There was a long chord showing them how long our intestines actually are. As the bell rang they hurriedly went back in line to get ready to the next room.
The next room was the Global Village, showing the different countries around the world. The kids were able to try out different costumes and had their photos taken. We then went to the Marketplace where there was a small sari-sari store with products for selling like fruits and vegetables. They went inside the grocery and drug stores to try what it was like to sell things. They also got to ride in a huge firetruck and put on some hard hats and got to be firefighters for the day. The last hall was Planet Earth where the kids got to learn how we can save our planet earth. It was fun to watch the kids excitedly going around the rooms. It was mostly everyone’s first time to go to the museum and they were all very eager to learn new things.
As we headed back to the hall we asked a few questions to check if the kids learned something. The kids were able to answer the questions correctly. Everyone got to enjoy their chicken and spaghetti meal. The volunteers ate with the children as they talked about their adventures for the day. Ate Sev and Ate Liza gave out lots of gifts. Each got a backpack full of notebooks and treats. The children also got lots of toys that it was hard for them to fit in their bags. We sang a Happy Birthday song for Ate Sev and Ate Liza and thank them for the wonderful opportunity the kids got to have.
